There are 5 main types of hanging backdrop material:
- Paper rolls
- Muslin (cloth)
- Floor Drop
- Pop up / collapsible
They are available in varying sizes depending on your needs.
Paper rolls are extra thick paper which is quite durable but can dirty and rip with excess usage. They come in widths of 53", 86", 107" and 140". There is either 36' or 50' length of paper per roll and it is wrapped on a thick cardboard core.
Muslin backdrops come in varying widths and lengths with some popular sizes being 10' x 20' and 10' x 12'. These backdrops are very portable in that they can be lightly crumpled up and tossed in a bag.
Vinyl backdrops are best suited to a permanent studio location due to their weight. They are very durable and come in varying widths and lengths such as 5' x 7', 8' x 10' and 10' x 20'. They tend to be the most expensive as well.
Floor drops are rubber backed, printed polyester backdrops that are very durable but tend to come in smaller sizes such as 5' x 7' or 8' x 8'. They usually have printed textures such as 'wood floor' or 'brick work'. Ideal for creating the look and feel of location shots in the studio.
Pop up / Collapsible backdrops are great for quick, location set up for portraits or headshots. The initial kit may include a pop out, double sided backdrop and a light, portable backdrop stand. Usually 5' x 7' size.
Background stand kits usually include height adjustable stands and a width adjustable, supporting crossbar. They are available in varying widths and heights and most will come with a carrying bag. Click the link below for some options.
